Disturb & Disrupt

Last week I had the joy of hanging out with Carlos for a few days. We had some work to do in Florida and we covered a lot of ground in a very short time. As we talked about everything from hip hop, to church culture, to junk food, he kept coming back to this theme that has taken hold of his life…his passion to “disturb and disrupt”.

No one desires to be disturbed, or to have their lives disrupted. The problem is, without some disturbing and disrupting there is no way to grow. Imagine if farmers never disturbed or disrupted the soil, crops would suffer. Disturbing and disrupting is part of a healthy cycle of development and growth. Unfortunately, as people, we hate for this to happen. We fall into our comfort zones. We fear change. We hate the idea of our worlds being turned on their heads. But without a little disturbing and disrupting we will fall prey to the status quo, to becoming normal, to losing our fire, and we stop growing corps that are worth being picked.

Disturbing and disrupting can happen by chance, but usually happens intentionally. It is a leaders responsibility to fight off the status quo and keep their teams motivated, moving, and fresh. Disturb and disrupt your world today. It might start with something small, changing a meeting location…or it might be something massive like shifting the focus of a campaign, but be aware of the need to disturb and disrupt your world.

(sidebar: this applies to our spiritual lives too. Do not fall into a “norm” with your relationship with God. Disturb and disrupt your routine to keep it fresh)

How does a youngster like myself disturb and disrupt without making it look like I am just being rebellious?

Play inside the rules, but find solutions that challenge. Disturb and disrupt your own systems in your life. It is not as hard as it looks. It is more about growth than rebellion. Rebellion is rooted in disrespect, innovation is rooted in ideas. Bring great ideas to the table with new ways of executing them…at that point you have disturb and disrupted the system.
