Why I: Blog

I get asked all the time: “Why do you blog.” I used to have a pretty good canned answer until I started asking myself the same question. The fact is blogging has become so different from when I started years ago. Now there are so many rules! Do this, don’t do that. Engage, be personal, don’t be that personal, talk about work, talk about life, don’t talk about your life,  be authentic, talk about sex so you have more views, blah blah blah.

Here is the deal:

But that is why those guys are who they are, they are the best THEMS that they can be. They are all great at what they do. You should hear everything they communicate, it is all amazing stuff and stuff that feeds my life.

In life we have this bad habit of finding what is working for one person or church or organization and we try to take that blueprint and duplicate it in our space. Either on our blog or in our church, or as a part of our organization. But God created us to all be unique. We do not need another Jay, Ben, Los, Mike, Pete, or Seth…but we need you and we need me and we need the unique, corky, authentic version of US.

So when you come here, and I am thankful and humbled that you would take the time to visit, you will get this:

  • Posts on leadership as I wrestle through the growth of becoming a better leader.
  • Posts on worship and music because I live it every day and I love it.
  • Posts on creativity.
  • Posts on church and church culture, its where I grew up and I still have a love for it.
  • I hope that you find some encouragement from time to time.
  • You might get an occasional personal post about my family, or football, or tennis or something random.

I never had a master plan for my blog. I started blogging to develop relationships, work through ideas, and share parts of the journey. Thats why I blog.

Exquisite. That’s the ultimate best thing we can all do – follow God in our own unique walk and stop trying to copycat everyone else.

    Thanks for passing that along.

Great stuff Stephen. I think a lot of folks are on that journey of figuring out how to be the best “them” they can be. I know I am. My hope is that God helps us all to find our identity & validation in Him. Thanks for being one of the lights along the path bro.

I am glad you do not try to be like any of them, to be honest I wouldn’t read your blog if you if I could tell that you were trying to be someone different. That is why I like your blog, it seems to be your space and who you are.

I blog because I want to make sure that I am not crazy. Get the things that I am thinking about, struggling with, and going through out to others to see if I am not alone and start a dialogue.
