When I was a kid in school I loved show and tell. It was so much fun seeing other kids get the chance to talk about things that excited them, stuff they were passionate about, what they cared about, and what had a small piece of their little hearts. Show and tell days allowed the audible, visual, and experiential learners to all share in an experience.

Now as a grown up, I think we could really use some show and tell time. People want to be valued. It does not matter if it’s an artist or an accountant – value matters and it changes the chemistry and experiences around teams.

As leaders, we have a responsibility to show and tell people what we think.

  • If you value someone, don’t let them guess if they’re valued – show them and tell them.
  • If someone is missing the mark and not meeting expectations, show them and tell them so they can get better.
  • If you care about someone…
  • If you are thankful for someone…
  • If you respect someone…
  • If someone does a good job on your team…
  • If a volunteer blows you away…
  • If….

Show and tell. It’s important. It matters. It will change the passion and culture of your organization. Showing people how you feel and telling them how much their investment matters costs you nothing – but it will mean everything to them.
